Fortunately, we have it straight from Ecma, courtesy of Rob Weir. The value is that Ecma’s standards process “offers a path which will minimise risk of changes to input specs” !

Sadly, I fear this may be one of those details that leaves the expert speechless and the layman wondering what the fuss is about.
Isn’t it a good thing that the chance of changes is minimized? Er, no. A standard is supposed to be something that everyone can use, and indeed that everyone (in that area) does use. It is not supposed to be a way of allowing you to claim to be a good corporate citizen without actually being one. But you can see why MS likes it so much.
